Hands On Homeschool Math with Numberblocks Blocks and No More iPad Learning
The biggest shift in our homeschool did not come from a new online program, a fancy app, or more screen time. It came from a printer, a stack of paper, and a little box of Numberblocks blocks my kids could actually touch.
When my kids were younger, the Numberblocks program was one of those shows that made math feel friendly. The characters were bright, silly, and easy to remember. One was one block tall. Two was two blocks tall. Three could split apart and come back together. It gave numbers personality, which is a huge deal when children are still learning that numbers are not just marks on a page.
Now that we are homeschooling, those same ideas have become much more useful away from the screen. My kindergartener can build `3 + 2` with real blocks and see the answer right in front of them. My 3rd grader can use the same set to work through multiplication, division, arrays, and grouping.
That hands-on piece changed the whole feeling of our school day.
We are not fighting the iPads. We are not asking the kids to sit through one more online class when their brains and bodies are clearly done. We are printing real worksheets, pulling out blocks, writing with pencils, reading real books, and seeing real progress.

The Numberblocks program made numbers feel like characters
When children are very young, math can feel invisible. Adults can say, “Three plus two equals five,” but that does not mean a child can picture it.
That was one of the things I loved about the Numberblocks program when my kids were little. It made numbers visual. Each number had a shape, height, face, and personality. Instead of math being a flat worksheet, it became something they could talk about.
My kids could remember that:
One was a single block.
Two was made of two.
Three could stand tall or arrange in different ways.
Bigger numbers were made from smaller numbers.
Numbers could join together and split apart.
That last idea matters so much. Addition and subtraction are really about joining and separating. Multiplication is repeated groups. Division is sharing or making equal groups. Those big math words become easier when a child has already watched numbers build, break apart, and come back together.
The show gave us the language first. The blocks gave us the experience later.
I do not think every educational show becomes useful beyond the screen. Some shows entertain more than they teach. But Numberblocks stuck with my kids because the characters were tied directly to math ideas. They were not just watching a story. They were watching numbers behave like numbers.
Now, when I pull out the block set, it feels familiar instead of brand new. My kids already have memories attached to the characters. That makes it easier to say, “Let’s build this one,” or “Can you show me what five looks like?”
The block set made math concrete
The Numberblocks set we use comes with actual blocks, and that is the part that made it worth keeping in our homeschool supplies. The kids are not just looking at numbers. They are building them.
The kit also comes with stickers for the faces, which my kids loved. That small detail matters more than I expected. A plain cube is useful, but a cube with a little face suddenly feels like part of the Numberblocks world. My kindergartener was much more excited to use the blocks after we added the stickers.
Putting the stickers on also gave us a fun setup activity. It felt less like opening a school tool and more like creating something we would use together.
For my kindergartener, we keep the math very simple. We might build:
`3 + 2 = 5`
First, we make a tower of three. Then we make a tower of two. Then we push them together and count all the blocks.
There is no guessing. There is no blank stare at a worksheet. The answer is sitting right there.
We also use the blocks for subtraction:
`5 - 2 = 3`
We build five, take away two, and count what remains.
That physical action helps the lesson make sense. My child can see that subtraction is not just a symbol. It means something changed.

For my 3rd grader, the same blocks still work, just in bigger ways. We use them for multiplication by making equal groups.
For example:
`4 x 3 = 12`
We build four groups of three blocks. Then we count by threes or count the total. After that, we write the equation.
We can also turn it around:
`12 ÷ 3 = 4`
We start with 12 blocks and split them into groups of three. Then we count how many groups we made.
That one activity shows the connection between multiplication and division better than a screen ever did for us. My 3rd grader can see that the facts are related. It is not just memorizing a chart. It is learning how numbers work.
The same set works for both ages, which is one of my favorite parts. I do not need one math manipulative for kindergarten and a completely different one for 3rd grade. I can adjust the lesson and keep the tool the same.
Online courses were not working for our home
Homeschooling sounds peaceful in theory. In real life, there are dishes in the sink, a toddler asking for snacks, pencils missing, and someone crying because the internet froze.
Online courses made that harder for us.
At first, I thought online learning would make things easier. The lessons were already planned. The videos were ready. The kids could log in, follow along, and learn.
But the iPad became the center of everything.
One short lesson turned into another video. A math activity turned into tapping around. A reading lesson turned into frustration because someone clicked the wrong button or wanted to change apps. Even when the content was educational, the screen itself pulled their attention in too many directions.
I started to feel like I was managing devices more than teaching.
That was not the kind of homeschool I wanted. I did not want my children addicted to iPads. I did not want every subject to feel like another reason to stare at a screen. I wanted them to use their hands, move pieces around, write on paper, read from books, and work through problems without the constant glow of a device.
That does not mean screens are always bad. We still appreciate a good educational show, and Numberblocks was one of the good ones for our family. The difference is that we no longer rely on the screen to do most of the teaching.
Now the screen is occasional. The hands-on learning is daily.
That balance feels healthier for us.
Buying a printer changed our homeschool rhythm
One of the most practical things we did was buy a printer.
That sounds almost too simple, but it made a huge difference. Instead of depending on online lessons, I could print math pages, reading practice, handwriting sheets, phonics work, and simple activities. The kids could hold the paper, write directly on it, circle answers, cross things out, color, cut, and sort.
A printer gave us more control over the day.
If my kindergartener needed more practice with addition, I could print a few simple problems and bring out the blocks. If my 3rd grader needed extra work with multiplication, I could print a page and have the blocks ready for arrays and groups.
The paper gave us the structure. The blocks gave us the meaning.
That combination has worked so much better than online classes for us.
Our routine is not complicated. Most days, it looks something like this:
Read together from a real book.
Practice phonics or spelling on paper.
Work through a printed math page.
Use blocks or another hands-on tool when a problem feels tricky.
Write a few sentences or copy a short passage.
Take breaks before everyone gets overwhelmed.
It is simple, but simple has been good.
The kids are doing really great in math and reading since we stopped leaning so heavily on online classes. They seem calmer. They stay with the lesson longer. They ask more questions. They make fewer random clicks because there is nothing to click. Their imaginations have re-blossomed.
For reading, paper has helped too. My child can point to words, underline sounds, and reread a sentence without a pop-up, button, or loading screen. We can sit together and actually hear what is happening. I can tell right away if a word pattern is hard or if a book is too easy.
For math, the hands-on tools slow things down in a good way. Instead of rushing through answers, the kids build, count, check, and explain.
That explanation piece is big. If my 3rd grader can build `18 ÷ 3` and tell me, “I made three equal groups and each group has six,” I know the idea is starting to stick.
Hands-on math helps both ages learn at their own level
One reason I like using blocks in homeschool is that one activity can stretch or shrink depending on the child.
My kindergartener might use five blocks total. My 3rd grader might use 24. They can sit at the same table, use the same kind of tool, and work on very different skills.
For younger learners, Numberblocks-style blocks help with:
Counting one by one
Number recognition
Simple addition
Simple subtraction
Comparing more and less
Making numbers in different ways
For older learners, the same blocks can help with:
Skip counting
Arrays
Multiplication facts
Division
Remainders
Fact families
Area models later on
That is the beauty of a good manipulative. It does not become useless after one grade. It grows with the child.
With my kindergartener, I might ask, “Can you build five in two parts?” That could become `4 + 1`, `3 + 2`, or `2 + 3`.
With my 3rd grader, I might ask, “How many different arrays can you make with 12 blocks?” That could become `1 x 12`, `2 x 6`, `3 x 4`, and the reverse facts.
Same blocks. Different thinking.
The face stickers add a little fun, but the real value is in the building. Children can hold the math in their hands. They can fix mistakes without feeling defeated. If a group is uneven, they can move a block. If the answer looks wrong, they can count again.
Math becomes flexible instead of scary.
What changed when we stepped back from the iPad
The biggest change was not just academic. It was the mood in our home.
When we were doing more online learning, school felt choppy. Log in. Wait. Watch. Click. Get distracted. Redirect. Repeat.
Now our homeschool feels more grounded. Not perfect. Not always quiet. But more connected.
I can sit beside my kids and see their work. I can notice when my kindergartener is counting the same block twice. I can catch when my 3rd grader understands multiplication but gets stuck on writing the equation. I can adjust right away.
That is harder to do when a program is running the lesson.

The show introduced the numbers. The blocks made the numbers real. The printed work gave us a path to practice.
That mix has been so much better for our family than trying to make every subject happen through an iPad.
A simple setup can be enough
Homeschooling can make it feel like every decision needs to be big. The perfect curriculum. The perfect schedule. The perfect program.
But sometimes the best changes are small.
For us, buying a printer and using hands-on tools made school feel more doable. The Numberblocks blocks gave my kids a bridge between a program they already loved and the math they needed to practice. My kindergartener can see `3 + 2`. My 3rd grader can build bigger multiplication and division problems. Both of them can learn without needing the iPad to be the main teacher.
There are still hard days. There are still lessons that take longer than I planned. There are still moments when someone would rather do anything except math.
But the progress is real.
The kids are reading more confidently. They are understanding math more clearly. They are spending less time on screens. And I feel more involved in what they are actually learning.
That is the kind of homeschool rhythm I want to keep building: paper, pencils, books, blocks, and children who can see that learning is something they can touch, shape, read, write, and understand.
